Our counseling staff is highly qualified to serve your needs and guide you when making assessments or referrals. Each staff member is licensed in the fields of counseling, family therapy, or psychology, and they have all gained years of experience working in a wide variety of clinical settings.

Tandrea J. Carter, Ph.D.
Tandrea Carter is the director of Counseling for Faculty and Staff. She is a licensed psychologist who earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology with a concentration in health psychology from the University of Miami. Tandrea has worked in a variety of environments addressing an array of mental and physical health issues.
Julie R. Neal, MA, PA
Julie Reed Neal is a Licensed Psychological Associate and has a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology. Ms. Neal completed both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at ASU. She has been practicing in Boone since 1991 and has worked in the local community mental health system, in private practice and evaluating children in the public school system. In her work at Counseling for Faculty and Staff, Ms. Neal offers counseling for adults, teens and children and works both with individuals and families/couples. She is a certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator and offers parenting classes for ASU staff, family members, and the general public. These 5 week classes are typically offered twice a year, in the Spring semester and the Fall semester, with a follow-up ongoing support group for parents who have completed the course.
Catherine E. Scantlin, MS, LPC
Catherine Scantlin is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She completed her BS in Health Promotion at Appalachian State University, and her MS in Community Counseling at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Catherine has practiced counseling in a variety of community and professional settings such as Hospice, homeless shelters, schools, university campuses, wellness centers, private practice, business consulting, and mental health management at the state level. She has worked with children, adolescences, couples, families, and groups on issues including substance abuse, stress management, eating disorders, time management, personal growth, relationship improvement, depression, and anxiety. Catherine is also a wellness educator helping people find improvement and balance in all areas of wellness. She is a certified yoga instructor and teaches yoga workshops for adults and children through the Counseling for Faculty and Staff Department. Catherine also works as an academic advisor for students in University College
